Spartans win ninth straight, routing Warriors

The boys’ hockey team won their ninth straight game Friday night in a 9-1 blowout over Rice Lake at Wessman Arena.

The Spartans shot ahead early, taking the lead with a goal from senior Taylor Burger at 2:09 in the first-period with an assist from senior Drew DeBruyne.

Once they were ahead, the Spartans never looked back, taking a 7-0 lead that included two goals apiece from senior Grant Sorensen, senior Taylor Burger and junior Gunnar Hansen. Senior Max Curtis also scored a goal during the run.

“My linemates set me up – for sure,” Sorensen said. “I got a lot of good looks.”

Rice Lake was finally able to find the back of the net after a 4:50 third-period goal from senior Trey Aaby off assists from freshman Cole Fenske and junior Riley Strohm.

The goal was too little and too late for the Warriors.

Senior Trevor Dalbec and junior Spencer Gudowski sealed the game, pitching in a pair to give the Spartans their 9-1 win.

The Spartans outshot the Warriors 32-9, and senior Dayton Podvin finished with eight saves for the Spartans. Rice Lake’s two goaltenders, junior Aiden Ferguson and freshman Ian Krance, combined for 25 saves.

The Spartans entered the rink having notched a 5-4 win the night before on the same ice against Duluth Denfeld.

Superior improves to 9-1 (2-0 Lake Superior Conference).

The Spartans’ JV team won 5-1 on Thursday against Duluth Denfeld, and did not play Friday night. The JV team improved to 7-1.
