With the musical’s first showing being scheduled on May 8, 2026, lead director, Amber Gilbert, initiated the first rehearsal for “Matilda” on Feb. 25. Cast members began by circling up and doing an icebreaker activity to get to know each other, building bonds and getting familiar with being on the stage. Following this activity, they went over and highlighted their lines to further understand who they will become on stage.
The first week is always the most stressful time for young actors. With new people, new lines, and lots of responsibilities, the cast has to get comfortable with the strange environment. Getting to know the other actors is a crucial step for success because of the vulnerability that comes with the stress of messing up in front of an audience.
“The first week is the most stressful and vulnerable time for everyone,” Joy Becken said.
Becken will be playing Ms. Honey in the musical.
With members in all grades ranging from elementary to high school, getting to know one another lifts the weight off cast members knowing that they have people around them experiencing the same uncertainty.
Set practice times with the entire cast together are held in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at SHS from 3:30-5:00, and on Saturdays from 11:00-2:00. The cast members practice their lines, choreography, and spacing. Self guided practices are also held outside of school hours with cast members getting together to rehearse their lines and choreography at home.
All this hard work ensures that the performance runs smoothly and as effectively as possible, making sure everyone can still enjoy their time being a member of Matilda while putting on a great show for the audience.
