Up until last week, girls lacrosse had not won a regular season game since their inception in 2024. Their 10-9 triple overtime win over Marshall on April 16 changed the story and the Spartans did not disappoint in the following days. Superior followed their first win with another one at home over Notre Dame the next day, and 6-5 win on the road against St. Paul Two Rivers on April 18.
Of the 35 girls that are on the team now, only nine of them were on the original team that secured a single playoff win in 2024. Knowing that a win is possible may have driven those nine returners. They have learned that wins are not always a guarantee, as they did not pocket any wins last season.
However, for sophomore Madden Sidorowicz and the ones who did not get that experience, the win felt different from others they may have experienced on other teams.

Sidorowicz has been playing Superior lacrosse for around eight years. She is currently playing for 218 Lax club and has been on the team for four years. She has grown up playing with a lot of the same girls and experienced many wins with them. Sidorowicz plays midfield, defender, and is a strong player and competitor for the high school team.
“That moment when the game winning shot went in, it felt so unreal. I definitely had hope for our team this year. Only being a few weeks into the season and doing what we tried so hard to do last year in just that little time was such a surprise for us sophomores. Now that we’ve gotten to experience that feeling I think it’s 100% pushed us even harder to achieve that again,” said Sidorowicz.

Senior captain Addy Benson was out last season due to a hockey injury putting her on the sideline as a manager. This year, she is back in action and did not let it affect her. Benson is the leading scorer with 11 points, averaging 2.2 per game in the first five games.
“Her coming back has not only helped to mentor those younger players, but helped set a tone of that missing piece we were looking for last year. We are lucky to have such a role-model on this team and her athletic experience allows us to try some different things as well,” said head coach Dustin Anderson.

The Superior girls lacrosse team believes strongly in transformational leadership. They set the tone and are role models for the team. Communication and attitude carry throughout the team creating a sense of camaraderie within the team.
The win over Marshall was a big step forward for the Spartans. Before the game, Anderson and the girls prepared more knowing that this could be the one that could break the losing streak to give the girls confidence going into the next. That boost of confidence carried over to the next day, and the day after, extending not just a one game win to break the losses, but extending it to a three game win streak.

“There is a sense of joy surrounding our team. Of course there is a realistic feeling of worry at times, but that worry is around whether or not we feel there will be injury, will the weather cooperate, or will we be able to keep healthy. I feel there is an overpowering sense of joy because of their pride in helping with building a culture,” said Anderson.
Since their three consecutive wins, the Spartans faced off against Stealth and lost bringing them to the record of 3-4. They will head down to Grand Rapids on April 23, and will host Neenah at home on April 24, at 7 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
