Tuesday, April 21 was a big and busy day for the spring Spartan athletes. All teams that played this day secured a win.
Some teams even gained the first win of the season. Boys varsity lacrosse secured a win in a close game against the Cloquet Lumberjacks 12-10.
This would be the first win of the season for the boys.
Throughout the game, there were many spots needing to be filled due to injuries, but the Spartans stepped up and gave a solid performance.
The boys also faced a tough roadblock in their game due to the amount of penalties that put them in a hard position to take and keep the lead.
“Overall the game went really well and getting that first win of the season brings a lot of momentum for us. We had some setbacks at multiple points but we persevered and pushed through it to secure the win,” said senior captain Hunter Sidorowicz.
Another win for the Spartans was the girls varsity softball team at home. Throughout the game, there was pressure building up to the Spartans until the clock ran out, forcing them to hold their score 9-8 up top against Duluth.
“Some challenges we faced were pushing through the errors. They really started to hit on us that last inning and it kind of caught us off guard, which led us to errors so we had to find that groove and confidence to get out of the inning,” said senior captain Daisy Martinez.
Varsity star and sophomore captain Tenley Lawton also played a huge role in the game. Her drive to win and ultimately her controlled pitches helped the Spartans to keep up against Duluth.
Girls varsity soccer went down to Chippewa Falls for their second game of the season, after having the last two games cancelled/postponed.
The girls came off strong in the first half and took the lead with the score standing at 2-1. Later in the second half, the game got more intense as the Spartans started to lose energy, but the girls worked hard and pulled through, scoring yet another goal to put them three to one.
Junior varsity goalie Ava Dahl was eager to play after so many roadblocks with game cancellations.
“Our team played very well. We have already had two games cancelled but have also only had two turf practices. Our team had some good communication and got off to a quick start scoring two goals right away. Our two games so far give me hope for this team after losing 14 seniors, that we still have a chance at being a competitor,” said Dahl.
Over at Duluth Denfeld’s field, the Spartan boys baseball team took on the Hunters and left, celebrating with a huge victory of 21-2 for varsity, and 13-1 for JV.
The boys varsity had a lot of confidence against the Hunters from the start and overall it helped them compete and play to the best of their abilities.
“Getting on the score board early in the game helped our momentum and gave the pitcher some comfort so after the hits started to stack up gave our team some confidence early in the game,” said sophomore Mattson Rue.
Rue stood out offensively against the Hunters and helped the team’s momentum greatly with five hits against the Hunters.
“We really needed that offensive spark along with the defense making all of their plays in the field. It was a much needed win and momentum shift for us,” said senior captain Austin Edwards.

Edwards had four scoreless innings pitched in the game and had two hits for the Spartans.
JV also secured the win against the Hunters.
“I think we came really strong with our bats. We were consistently hitting the ball and being smart when we got on base,” said sophomore Grant Peterson.
Junior pitcher Blake Meyers got at least one strike out an inning and when the Hunters weren’t striking out, the defense was backing him up every time with minimal errors.
