The players were lined up at the ready, waiting for their cue. Their instruments were adjusted, their music was prepared. The first song started, the tune “Sidewinder” played by the Superior High School Jazz Combo. The combo included saxophones, trumpet, drums, piano, bass and guitar.

The jazz band has been focusing their attention on the concert since the middle of Oct. As a result of the Performing Arts Center being unavailable to play in this year, the band was asked by Greg Moore, director for the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS) band, to play with them at UWS. The original plan was to perform at the middle school, but the two bands have combined forces. According to band director Joe Kasparek, the transition to UWS was smooth.

“It’s a true American music form,” Kasparek said.

The jazz band has been at SHS for around eight years, and it has been an influential part of the music program at SHS.
