Senior midfielder Kegan Sumption is participating in five clubs and two sports during his last year at Superior High School. Although senior year is known for being stressful, Sumption has loaded up his schedule and is currently enrolled in FBLA, DECA, Student Council, Forensics, and Robotics. On top of that, he is also a multisport athlete, being a part of Soccer and Tennis.
Sumption is part of a plethora of extracurricular activities that seem to have little correlation. So what gives?
Sumption’s reasoning behind this was that he wanted to “build a portfolio” by experiencing many different activities. He also looked at what clubs seemed useful to him and joined what his friends did. However, he mainly thought that by trying new things, he could gain many interpersonal skills. For instance, FBLA and DECA allow for a greater understanding of the inner workings of business interactions. Forensics helped him strengthen his public speaking abilities. Robotics and Student Council both enabled him to practice leadership and teamworking capabilities.

All the activities Sumption takes may seem very stressful, so how does he balance his school schedule with his life?
Along with his many clubs and sports, he is also taking 4 AP classes, so managing the pressure and deadlines are a necessity. If not controlled properly, it can lead to a snowball of compounding tasks.
“I dedicated time for myself in order to decompress,” Sumption said.
Early on, the overloaded schedule may have been hard for Sumption to adapt too. Yet he stayed consistent and was able to make new friends and learn many practical skills. One of which was gaining the confidence to speak in front of people. This didn’t come easy and took lots of experience. It shows that he wasn’t discouraged from trying new things and came out with a greater portfolio of diversified skills.
