Whether it’s scheduling early ice times, extra skate sharpening’s, buying a couple dozen boxes of Dunkin’ donuts, or a brand new TV after the first fell victim to a stray volleyball, girls hockey coach Scott Olson has always gone the extra mile.
Olson has been around hockey for a long time. His career includes playing, refereeing, and coaching. He started coaching the girls hockey team at Superior High School in 2024.
“I’ve been around it my whole life, and there is truly no better game on the face of the planet than this. I love teaching this game,” said Olson.
Olson believes that coaching is a great challenge that requires many different pieces to fit together.
“I enjoy working with so many different players and dissecting their game and finding the areas where you can improve and excel is like putting a puzzle together for me,” said Olson.
Olson has impacted many players in his time coaching, including junior defenceman Ellie Olson. Having Scott Olson as a coach has pushed her to grow as an athlete and given her motivation to improve.
“He creates a supportive environment, if I didn’t understand something he didn’t hesitate to take me over to the white board and explain it until I got it,” said Ellie Olson.
Many players on the team can attest to the tremendous amount of time and effort that he puts into the team’s success.
“He goes above and beyond in many ways, especially by taking extra time outside of the rink to study our film, and make drills. He was always willing to stay after practice and shoot, or just talk about situations in a game,” said Ellie Olson. “He works hard to get extra ice time in the mornings, and is more than happy to wake up at five am and drive into town to coach us.”
Olson is often referred to as a coach that the girls can go to for support and encouragement. He is someone that doesn’t mind staying after practice to talk, even when the conversation is not hockey related.
“He likes to build connections. He exceeds all the expectations of a coach, giving so much to our team, he makes everyone feel like they belong and they are appreciated,” said Junior captain Aaliyah Haroldson.
Olson recently won Wisconsin Prep Hockey’s “Under the Radar Coach of the Year” award alongside girls hockey Head Coach Doug Trentor. The article, written by Dan Bauer, can be found on Wisconsin Prep Hockey’s website.
