During the winter offseason Spartan football player Maxton Luzaich had a conversation with head football coach Rob Scott. Scott told Luzaich that he needed to step up and be a leader in both the football program and athletic development. Luzaich took that and ran with it.
Luzaich had always been consistent in the offseason with athletic development, however this offseason he wanted to put in all the work he could to become a better football player and athlete.
The Spartan athletic development program goes from the end of the fall sports season to the end of July. Scott wants every single athlete at the school to be in athletic development, especially the football players.
On Monday and Thursday mornings during the winter and spring offseason athletes come in before school and participate in a speed and agility workout. While every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday after school the athletes have a lifting based workout. Luzaich has made it to more than 90 percent of those workouts.
Luzaich would workout with other leaders in the weightroom which helped him develop into a better leader and teammate. Senior football captain Becket Selden is one of these leaders and strongly believes that Luzaich is a big leader in the program.
“Maxton showed up to pretty much everything during the off-season, things like camps, athletic development, 7 on 7, I think that correlates to him being a leader,” said Selden.
Senior football captain Taynum Clark also worked with Luzaich during the offseason and also believes that Luzaich is a big leader.
“Maxton was at every lift and before school workout there was, he helped with getting more people into lifting and helped with people learning new workouts that they have never done before,” said Clark.
One of Luzaich’s main goals in the offseason was to get as many people in athletic development as he could. He didn’t want to be a person who would get people in and not help them, as he is a leader that leads by example, showing people what to do and how to do it.
“I just want to get every athlete in the school to go to athletic development. I want to be known as someone who leads by example instead of telling people to go and for me to not show up,” said Luzaich.
