Interact Club prepares for their yearly Toe-Vember event starting on Nov. 4. More donations from advisory students are needed to fulfill chosen shelters’ needs. The advisory with the highest sock donation will win an ice cream party, and a traveling trophy award.
Interact Club’s Toe-vember event involves SHS students donating unused socks to bags that will be found in their advisory classrooms starting on Nov. 4. At the end of the month, Interact Club participants will go to all the advisories to collect the donated socks, which will then be given to a variety of local shelters.
This year, the collected socks will be donated to multiple shelters including; Valley Youth Center, Harbor House Crisis Center, and Lincoln Park Hope Center.
“Each pair of socks helps,” Interact Club president Joli Lepien said. “We have a huge homeless population in our area. We strive to have a genuine impact.”
Every sock collected in this event makes real changes within our community, making student participation in this event crucial to true success.
“Last year we got over 700 socks, which was super crazy, I know we usually get around 300-500,” Lepien said.
Despite this, student participation is still lacking.
“More often than not, we collect empty advisory bags.” co-vice President of Interact Club, Lauren Heier said.
Interact Club stresses the importance of participation in this event. It is no secret that our Twin Ports area has a high homeless population, and donations make real changes within our community.
“Last year we had a pair of Halloween socks which somebody donated, and I saw someone in Duluth wearing them. I was like, I remember those,” Lepien said. “That was the moment that made me realize, wow, this is having a genuine impact in our community.”
