Superior boys’ swim took home their first meet victory last night against Rice Lake in the SHS natatorium.

Junior Orion Johnson competed in the 200-yard medley, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Unfortunately for him, he was having a few issues with his goggles. During his 100-yard event, his goggles slid off his face and down to his neck.

“I lost character and due to my mishap, I came in the last place. Next time I have to keep trying,” Johnson said.

Johnson ended with a time of 1:17:04 on his 100-yard freestyle, which put him in last place in this event, gaining one point for Superior.

“We did well last night. Regarding Orion, he has been improving on his swimming and he has been stuck on keeping his head up and not down, but it is beginning to click. He should not be having his goggles fall off this far into it, but we are working on that,” Punkyo said.

Senior Caden Willie, sophomore Max Reed, sophomore Logan Jelinek and senior Mike Barnaby took home an eight-point win in the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Andrew Lisak, senior Nate Peterson, senior Mike Barnaby, and junior Ben Hintzman also had an eight-point win in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Other big wins came from junior Ben Hintzman in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle, and senior Mike Barnaby the 50-yard freestyle. These wins gained six points each per event.

Superior beat Rice Lake by a score of 94-76 and got their first win.

Next up for the Spartans is a Jan. 24 meet at Grand Rapids.
