The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks won the 36th Annual Spartan Wrestling Classic Jan. 5 at Superior High School. The Spartans ended up placing 10th in the tournament.

The gym was bustling with people from all over Wisconsin and Minnesota with 12 schools participating in the Spartan Classic: Ashland; Bayfield; Chequamegon; Cloquet, Minnesota; Eau Claire Memorial; Ladysmith; Proctor, Minnesota; Shell Lake; Superior; Northwestern; Virginia, Minnesota; and Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Superior Senior Jackson Karren won one of his six matches on Saturday. He was also very proud of his fellow wrestlers.

“Up until fifth grade, I was in hockey but dropped it my sixth grade year, and I was trying to find a winter sport and took up wrestling because of my dad,” Karren said.

Karren loves the team aspect of wrestling, but he does not plan on continuing his wrestling career in college or beyond.

Superior will next participate in the Ashland Invite Jan. 12.
