Students will now be given a different version of the drug test that is already being used. Among the new drugs being read, alcohol has been one of the new drugs added to the test.

Drug testing at Superior High School has been present since 2007, and now a new version of the test will be given to some students.

“With better testing resources now, we changed testing companies that allows for the testing of alcohol, and has recommendations of the most commonly used drugs by high school students,” Athletic Director Ray Kosey said.

What has not changed is that students can only be tested if they are in any extracurricular activities at the school, have acquired a parking pass and if they are Pledgemakers. Also, it is still 100 percent random.

“The intent of first introducing the drug tests was not to catch people, but to get students to say ‘no,’” Kosey said. “We believe that getting the new test will help get our students to say ‘no’ to drugs that are more common today.”

Senior Branden McClure is in all three of the categories and has been drug tested before.

“I don’t have a problem with the drug testing because I simply don’t do drugs,” McClure said

According to Kosey, a positive test is depended on the drug used and when the student used it last. The main determinants are how long ago it happened and how much of the drug was consumed.

“We know that there are parties going on and believe that alcohol is probably the drug that is most used and preferred by teens,” Kosey said.

Alcohol has been a violation in the code of conduct and will now be able to be tested more reliably.

“If any drug use is found early in teen years, then it is easier to get them help,” Kosey said.
