In the month of December, the average lowest temperature in Superior is 11 degrees Farenheit, according to US Climate Data. Thanks to Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and the Interact club, children can be warm this winter.

Starting on Dec. 1, advisors Marybeth Jacobs and Angela Johnson began the annual giving tree project. Students take part in the project by helping sew and distribute hats and mittens to schools in the districts. They have also collected donations from anyone who is willing.

“When we started they went to the salvation army, but recently we changed to local elementary schools,” Jacob said.

Johnson has helped students organize the tree for over 12 years. She overlooks the students, as they run most of the project.

“As a mom of younger kids, I know there is lots of kids unprepared for winter,” Johnson said.

It was junior Gabby Shaul’s first year taking part in the giving tree project. Shaul loved sewing after learning the skill in ninth grade and used that skill to give back.

“It’s good knowing that it’s going to benefit someone especially kids in our area,” Shaul said.

FCCLA and the Interact club plan on distributing the hats and mittens on Dec. 20.
