Starting a band is something many kids dream of doing. For senior Rokkyn Nelson-Kavajecz, this dream came true. As a nine year old, her and her family began building a well known band known as Born Too Late.
This band includes many members of her family and others that take on different roles to help see this band succeed.
“Having a family oriented band is extremely beneficial for many reasons. Having that extra support from all other family members just makes it a lot easier. Having my brother there with me every step of the way as extra support is always nice when I need someone.” Nelson-Kavajecz said.
Starting this band came naturally for Nelson-Kavajecz and all involved. It started as something fun for their family to spend time doing together.
“Our uncles would come over and work with us, whether it was teaching us different instruments or learning about music all together.” Nelson-Kavajecz said.
Along with her uncles, Nelson-Kavajecz shares extreme gratitude for her mother who made a huge positive impact on this journey.

Simply spending family time together quickly turned into something much bigger for this band.
“The definition of success is different for everyone in the music industry. For me personally, being able to get our own sound out there for other people to experience is successful to me. Right away it felt like we were doing something good because of how many people we were able to reach with our music.” Nelson-Kavajecz said.
Through their success the band has gotten to experience many things that have shaped them and inspired them to keep going, even though the definition of success is different for each member.
“The most fulfilling part so far was when we recorded our album. The release parties we have are also really cool. Being able to see all of our supporters throughout the community is very motivating.” Nelson-Kavajecz said.
Having a strong support system is crucial for many different reasons, and luckily enough the band is able to see that support behind them.
Nelson-Kavajecz herself is not only an amazing artist but also still a senior in high school nearing graduation, who is battling the big decisions regarding the future. The big question many are wondering is whether or not Nelson-Kavajecz will continue her music journey outside of high school.
Nelson-Kavajecz has many plans. However, she is unsure of the specific path she wants to take. She wants to do something in mental health, but she notes that art and music will always have relevance in her life.
