“A good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life.”- John Wooden
Assistant cross country coach and math teacher Lindsey Smith is the type of coach that changes lives. Smith has been my coach since my freshman year, and she has influenced me and changed my life everyday. For me personally, Smith made a huge influence on me last fall.
I was having a very tough time dealing with being out for the season due to an injury, and Smith would check in with me everyday to make sure that I was okay. She was there for me during my recovery by checking in on me. I have rarely seen anyone care more about me as an athlete or person.
Head coach Lee Sims can attest to her impact beyond current athletes.
“Past and current athletes know that they’re going to be held accountable because they know that coach Smith believes in them,” said Sims.
Even going back to 2019 graduates, Smith still has stayed connected to former athletes.

“I see Jennifer Nummi and Shannon McCoshen. They ran for me for four years, I watch them when they run the half marathons and I’m on the sidelines on Grandma’s Marathon weekend cheering for them, and they recognize me which is pretty cool,” said Smith.
Smith obtains this special relationship with athletes by running and talking with the athletes during those long runs at practice.
“You can do the workout and run with the kids which is unlike any other sport and that allows you to get to know them,” said Smith.
Sims recognizes Smith is very influential to her athletes and that she is a great assistant coach to work with.
“Coach Smith has a strong sense of knowing when we need to be digging in more and call things like they are, and be blunt about things but still be approachable, which helps me reset as a coach,” said Sims.
What sets Smith apart from others is her motivational skills. Cross country is the type of sport where you have to be mentally tough. Every runner has their moments where you want to stop or take the easy way out. It is in those moments when Smith shows she believes in you and gives you the extra kick you need.
Personally, I know that I would not be as motivated as I am if it were not for Smith pushing me everyday but also believing me. She has been there for me through thick and thin, cares about her athletes, and that is why I believe she is one of the most influential people.
If you are looking for something to join, or just getting connected with someone you know will have your back, joining cross country or building a relationship with Smith will do that because she is the coach that changes lives.
