Hello Spartan Spin and Spartan Community!
The parking at the Superior High School has recently become a safety concern to the
public. Recently there has been multiple students parking in spots that aren’t actually marked
spots, including sidewalks and in the middle of the actual parking lot, blocking the exit and
entrance to the parking lot. This has happened multiple times, enough to which the SHS admin
had begun placing tickets with gift cards on students windshields who are parked correctly.
Another issue that has also been recently discovered is the lack of handicap parking spots
available during public events. When there are events hosted at the high school, employees
usually will have to mark off different sections of the parking lots in order to make more
handicap parking spots accessible. This can create a lot more work for the employees while
getting rid of the available parking spots that are usually for standard parking. Speaking to a well
known dean who also runs our parking lots, Brian Denninger, spoke on this issue. Stating that
this year specifically had been increasingly worse compared to previous classes, from blocked
exits preventing 1st responders to access the lot, to handicapped spaces taken by those unneeding
of them. Denninger suggested bringing back paying for a parking pass, a mere 5 dollars but it
would help keep a record of those allowed in the lots and those who are trespassing. Our school’s
resource officer offered her opinion on the matter. Repeating Denninger’s fact of blocking exits
for staff, students, and first responders; however she brought up the fact that if she were to leave
the building unattended to take care of the parking it left her unavailable to any misconduct that
needed to be addressed in the school.
When discussing their opinions on the current high school parking situation we learned
how much of an issue the parking actually is. Both have handed out multiple tickets and
detentions to students that were not following the parking rules. They both agree that something
needs to be done with the parking problems especially after seeing what has happened this year.
The solution that we came up with after researching this issue is at the start of next year
to charge students for a parking pass. It doesn’t have to be priced too expensive but then this will
help keep track of which students are able to park and which students are not following the rules.
We think this can also help by making sure people don’t misuse their parking pass if they have to
pay for it. We think this would be a small goal that would create a better system than what we
have currently. After this we can strive to reach a bigger goal like expanding one of the lots we
have currently to create more parking for students and for handicapped guests. This way
hopefully less people will park irresponsibly.
Thank you for considering our proposal,
