Dear Spartan Spin,
Superior High School offers an impressive course catalog, containing a multitude of core,
elective, and advanced placement or dual enrollment courses, but we are lacking in one
department: foreign language. Although SHS does have Spanish at levels I-V, for some
students, it may not be the preferred language to learn. As a result, students who want to
get at least 2 years of foreign language for a stronger college application can feel forced into
taking a language they are disinterested in just for the sake of their future. Furthermore,
many nearby schools like Denfeld, Duluth East, and Proctor offer French and/or German at
levels I-V on top of Spanish, adding to the unfairness students may feel.
In order to solve this problem, SHS should poll current and incoming students on what
foreign languages they would most like to learn out of a set of options; most likely French or
German. For example, the poll would include the choices: No Foreign classes, French,
German, or both French and Germany. Afterward, a proposal could be made and sent to Mr.
Fezzy, and then potentially to the school board. We believe that many others feel that SHS
should offer more for foreign languages, and that this issue should be addressed within the
upcoming school years.
Sincerely,
Taylor Schultz, Gavin Mencel, Phong Hoang, Isabel Carlson
