
The Boys varsity baseball team played the Hermantown Hawks at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex on May 13, they lost 13-10. Some highlights of the game were juniors Cameron LaPorte and Jayce Rue hit their first home runs. Junior Dawson Ahlborg pitched two scoreless innings as well. Junior Calvin Anderson and Mike Fiegle both added two hits with a combined of five RBI’s to help the spartan go up in the third inning. The top half of the fourth inning the Spartans had let the hawks fly right back in the game.
“Mental errors are what made us struggle,” said Ryan Hendry.

The Spartan softball had a two game week this week first talking about the BlueJackets of Hibbing High School. The Game ended with a final score of 13-3, Arianna Robillard was a key factor to the game with pitching 3.1 innings and striking out six batters with zero earned runs. At the plate she went two for four with a home run, two runs and two RBI’s. Mattie Schilling also had a great day at the plate going three for three with one double, three runs, and two RBI’s. In Their last game of the week the Spartans would face Proctor Rails. The Spartans went up early with a four to zero lead, the second inning they held off proctor to another no run inning for the Rails. In the bottom of the second inning the girls extended their lead with multi hit games from Ari Robillard, Halle Visger, Paige “Peeps” Johnson, Maddie Schilling and Paige Johnson. In the fourth inning Paige “ Peeps” Johnson leaves the yard to add another home run to her season. Catch the Spartans back in action against the Tigers of Northwestern High School.

The Superior Spartan boys and girls track team had their Lake Superior Conference meet on May 13 at Hibbing’s track. The boys team came in seventh out of nine teams with a team score of 53.5. Some highlights from the boys side is senior Logan Asuma winning long jump, Junior Tyler Willoughby winning pole vault, Senior Micky Little tying for 3rd in pole vault, and Junior Aiden Parks coming in fourth for the 100 meter dash. The girls track team came in sixth out of nine teams with a team score of 60.75. The top performances were Junior Elena Almote winning the mile, and coming in second in the 800 meter run, Senior Alivia Visger coming in second in Girls Shot Put, Junior Veronica Acuero and Sophomore Avery Waletzko tied for first place in pole vault. Superior’s next meet is regionals, on May 27th, with hopes to advance to sectionals and the state meet.
Superior boys golf played at Hidden Greens golf course for the Northwestern Invitational. Juniors Ryan Pettingill, sophomore Nolan Patel, sophomore Tanner Locken, junior Zeke Simiyu, and junior Rylan Davis finished second overall shooting a team score of 324 with the top golfer Tanner Locken shooting a plus four finishing with a final score of 76.
Spartans girls lacrosse played three games last weekend in Neenah, Wisc. The first of which being on Friday, May 9 against the Kimberly Papermakers. The Spartans would keep it close but would end up losing 9-7. Goal scorers for the Spartans were junior captain Lexi Kimmes, sophomore Lacey Skoglund (2), freshmen Madden Sidorowitz (2), Mya Grotberg, and Dillan Skandel. On Saturday May 10 the Spartans would open the day against the 9-4 Neenah Rockets. After a tight first half the Spartans would fall 11-5. Sophomore Lacey Skoglund would lead the team with three goals. Junior captain Lexi Kimmes and freshman Madden Sidorowitz also added to the tally. To round off the weekend the girls would play the 8-6 Bayport Pirates. The game did not go in the Spartans favor as they would lose 18-0 and drop to 0-11 on the year. The girls will be back in action for Senior Night on Friday, May 16.
Superior boy’s lacrosse only game of the week was at the Stealth of Proctor-Hermantown. The Spartans would battle but ultimately came up short losing the game 15-3. Goal scorers for the Spartans were freshman Henry Haugen (2) and sophomore Bower Severin (1). The Spartans will look to improve their 3-8 record at home in their last regular season game on Saturday, May 17 against Oneida Nation High School.

Girls soccer finished last week with their cancer awareness game against the Summerset Spartans. Superior would earn a 6-0 victory on Friday. Goal scorers for Superior were seniors Tayler McMeekin, Annabel Manion (2), Meara Moen, Brynn Johnson and sophomore Lily Clark with her first career varsity goal. Senior goalie Maggie Mueller with the shutout.
They were back in action on Tuesday with a game in Menomonie where the Spartans would take the win 3-0. Goal scorers for the Spartans were seniors Annabel Manion (2), and Meara Moen. Senior Maggie Mueller once again with the shutout in the net.

The boys tennis team had a match vs the Denfeld Hunters on May 12. Superior swept the Hunters with a 7-0 team win. Senior Aaron Moen was the player of the match with two 6-0 victories. The boys tennis team is now 2-0 against the hunters this season. This was the last home match for the boys spartan tennis team. The teams next match is at New Richmond, May 24.
