Sophomore Sierrah Markon competed with the varsity Mock Trial team at regionals on Feb. 1. Markon has been participating in Mock Trial since her freshman year when she was on the junior varsity team.
Markon is an attorney for the team, and her duties call her to give opening and closing statements, cross examinations, and to object when needed. Markon loves every part of Mock Trial, but she finds cross examination the most exciting.
“I love when you get to be intimidating and expose them for things, and the witness has a “gotcha” moment,” Markon said.
Science teacher Mike Weinandt noted that Markon plays a crucial role in the varsity team as the attorney because of her communication skills and intellect. He also mentioned that Markon has the potential to grow even more tremendously in her role, making her position on the varsity team crucial.

The team advanced to go to state where they won second place at regionals on Feb. 1 and 2.
“Winning second felt great, we worked really hard together and practiced every Monday and Wednesdays at school and Saturdays at the courthouse; it felt like all of our hard work finally paid off,” Markon said.
Markon is sad about all of the seniors leaving because she has gotten to be close with many of them and has created a bond. Markon is also nervous to see how the team will look next year.
Markon participates in dance at Stirling Silver and the Spartan Twirlers, and sometimes schedules collide. She loves both Mock Trial and her dances and works to make sure she is present at everything as much as possible.
Overall, Markon enjoys Mock Trial and recommends it to anyone who has extra free time and wants more involvement in academic school activities or wants to pursue a future in law or public speaking.
