Senior Carissa Vagt competed in her last match as a Spartan at the WIAA Girls Wrestling Sectional Tournament on Feb. 21, 2025 in Ladysmith, Wis.
Vagt earned her way to sectionals after competing in the regional tournament in Hayward on Feb. 14. She wrestled in the 165 class, earning first place. Vagt is the first girl from Superior High School to win first place at Regionals.
“I was very excited the whole night. It was very nerve racking, because all the pressure was on me with it being my last year and my last shot to make it onto the board,” said Vagt.
After a strong showing at regionals, Vagt earned the no. 1 seed at sectionals and received a first round bye. She knew she was going to be facing extremely tough competition. Going into sectionals, Vagt had a very intense week of practice to prepare herself.

“I was very nervous going into Sectionals. I was looking at brackets and studying my opponents” said Vagt.
At sectionals, Vagt appeared in two matches. She lost her first match where she faced Marissa Miles from Merril. In her next match she went up against Evelyn Fugate from Unity. Fugate eventually went on to qualify for the state tournament in Madison.
“After my last match I got my jacket from Coach Long and went to the locker room to have a moment by myself. In the end, I realized I was still proud to be a Spartan and of my wrestling career at SHS,” said Vagt.
Vagt finished her senior season with a record of 16-9. She is still undecided on where she will continue her wrestling career next year.
