Senior captain Anna Manion has been playing varsity basketball since her freshman year. Her athletic prowess and leadership capabilities allowed her to land her spot as captain for the team.
Every year, athletes are expected to adjust to additional players and the loss of players. It tends to be difficult getting back into the rhythm and in sync with individuals on and off the court, but when it comes to sophomore Ruby James, this came naturally to her.
After strengthening their relationship outside of school and during practice, it began reflecting on the court, giving Manion and James an advantage during games and practices.
“I feel like the chemistry is just there and we know what each other is gonna do next. For example, when we’re gonna pick and roll, we know where the other person is at,” Manion said.
Between the three captains, Manion is easy going and prides herself on not allowing mistakes to define her teammates
“She is the type of person that will bring you up no matter how you’re doing, she’s easy to talk to on and off the court,” James said.
After practicing with Manion last year and now being a part of varsity games with her, James sees many qualities in her that she plans to carry on herself during the next year’s season.
“I want to be Someone who lifts people up when they’re feeling down on themselves and knows how much my words can affect someone. This is something Anna does, she doesn’t let herself get to the point of being angry with someone,” James said.
Senior Tara Stratton has watched James and Manions connection grow and foster healthier relationships among the team, especially this year with all three of them playing on varsity together.
“Anna and Ruby’s friendship benefits them on the court because with them being so close, it really helps with their chemistry, whether that being excited for each other, or knowing exactly what each other is thinking. It impacts other people because when they are working well together on the court, and they are excited and positive, it helps the rest of the team build off of their successes and help with the overall turnout of the game,” Stratton said.
With Manion graduating this year, James anticipates it will be hard on her, but she plans on continuing to bring the same qualities to the team that Manion led with.
