Children’s craft event called ‘Crafty kids’ was held at the Superior Public Library on the first Saturday morning of October and November. Kelly Wiisanen, who is representing the children’s room at Superior Public Library, prepared two crafts for children each day.
The Crafty Kids program started about five years ago, and it takes place on the first Saturday of each month. The Superior Public Library builds a learning partnership with PBS Kids for the Crafty Kids program. PBS Kids is an educational media brand for kids. To partner with them, the library created the PBS Kids Learning Cohort to learn about PBS Kids.
“I created a book display based on some of the recommendations from PBS Kids. That was available for parents at the program so that they could learn more about Hispanic heritage and history,” Wiisanen said.
One of the crafts in October is paper cutting. Children can choose different colors of paper and follow the instructions to cut out the patterns. The other one is Katrina dolls. The Katrina dolls were in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Wiisanen hopes the children can have fun by learning about different cultures.
“I think the kids had a lot of fun learning about another culture that maybe some of them weren’t accustomed to, or celebrating their own culture and heritage,” Wiisanen said.
In November, children made Thanksgiving crafts. They decorate paper and write down things that they are thankful for. They also make maple leaves that can be decorated on the windows. Ms. Wiisanen and volunteers cut out maple leaf papers and took out yellow and red watercolor with droppers. After the children made the maple leaves, Ms. Wiisanen helped them wrap them up.
The Crafty Kids program is popular in Superior, sometimes they have more than 100 kids attend the events. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the next event will be Saturday, January 25 from 10-12. The Superior Public Library is looking forward to having more kids involved to enjoy the fun of making crafts.
