As the 2024 rifle opener for deer hunting kicked off on Nov. 23 and will last until Dec. 1, there are many things to keep in mind. First off, in order to go deer hunting you have to purchase a deer hunting license for the state of Wisconsin. You also have to complete a certified hunters safety course. Knowing these tips could save another person’s life or your own.
Ecology and conservation teacher Don Polkinghorne has been hunting since 1982 at the age of 12. Polkinghorne says…
-Always unload your gun when going up or down from a stand.
-Always wear a safety harness when in a climber or ladder tree stand.
-Always know what is behind the deer when taking a shot.
-When doing deer drives, make sure you know all members of the deer drive (do not hunt with people you do not know).
-Treat all guns as if they are loaded.
-Practice with your weapon so that you know exactly how it works.
Science teacher Bill Reynolds is a certified hunter safety instructor. Reynolds says…
–Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
–Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
–Be sure of your target, what is before and beyond your target.
–Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.
And whenever you are transferring a firearm to another person…
–U Show that it is Unloaded
–S Show that the Safety is on
–A Show that the Action is open
