The Spartans football season came to an end against New Richmond on Oct. 18. The team ended with a 0-9 record, but had a season that was necessary for growth and their future playing.
“Going 0-9 on the scoreboard is not ideal or what anyone was hoping for, but what we can evaluate is the progress that we made,” said head coach Rob Scott.
Though the Spartans had many individual highlights, the most important thing to coach Scott is the team as a whole.
“There were a lot of good individuals but football is the ultimate team sport with 88 positions so not one person can do it by themselves,” said Scott.
Senior captain Tanner Leno was one of the quarterbacks who overcame some of his own challenges this season. He went out halfway through the second week of the season against Stevens Point due to an injury. Leno was out three weeks but worked hard to get back on the field and was able to come back week six against Chippewa falls.
“Despite what the scoreboard said, I’m proud of the fight and the effort that everyone gave year round. It was a great group of guys and the future of the team is bright,” said Leno.
Scott summed up their season in two words: continual growth. They were a completely different team week one than they were in week nine. According to Scott, the team worked very hard, made a lot of progress, and grew a ton over the season both on and off the field.
