Junior Adelyn Benson took on the challenge of starting a new sport during her junior year of high school. Prior to her joining the volleyball team, Benson played golf for the high school team. This fall, she made the decision to branch out and switch to volleyball.
Benson had an untapped interest in volleyball since she was young, but being a multi-sport athlete, she did not have much time to commit to learning a sport she was unfamiliar with.
“I played golf with some friends. It was fun but not my favorite because of the team aspect. It is completely different from volleyball, you’re kind of more alone, it’s not as fun for me anymore,” Benson said.
Benson claims to prefer volleyball over golf because she gets the opportunity to be more involved and to make connections with the people on her team. Learning a new sport was hard for her at first, but her coaches and teammates were very open to her joining and helping her become accustomed to the sport.
“The whole sport was really tough for me to learn. All of the things that are different from playing with your friends or sand volleyball. The technique and structure are very difficult to grasp at first but I was able to understand pretty quickly,” Benson said.
From making new friends to discovering new experiences, she is very happy with her decision to join the team.
