Sophomore quarterback Carson Smith made his first varsity start on Friday, Sept. 7 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. Smith secured the starting position due to an injury for senior captain Tanner Leno.
The Spartans had started the game with two consecutive touchdowns. This is the first game of the year that the team had scored on their first drive. Smith contributed to the 281 total offensive yards that the Spartans had.
“It was electric, the crowd was going nuts and all of my teammates were hyping me up,” said Smith.
Third year quarterback coach Gunner Johnson has worked with Smith one-on-one everyday at practice.
“He will continue to grow and has done an excellent job of working hard and doing his job day in and day out,” said Johnson.
Head coach Rob Scott helps Smith by reading defenses. During practice, Scott and Smith work together to understand the other team’s defense.
“Friday (Sept. 7) was just the start of a lot of things. He works very hard and has good character. He is getting to become a great leader at all levels and we are very very excited to have him.” said Scott.
Leno returned on Sept. 27, so Smith has shared time playing quarterback during games. The Spartans will play their final regular season game on Oct. 18 at home against the New Richmond Tigers.
