Starting high school can be a very exciting as well as a nerve-wracking experience. The transition from middle school to high school can be rough, so incoming freshmen may prepare themselves ahead of time by building on certain skills and habits. Not only do students need to prepare themselves academically, but students also need to learn how to go out of their comfort zone and to build new relationships.
As juniors on the Spartan Spin staff, we wish that we did things a bit differently. There are some things that freshmen might want to know to make their first school year at the high school easier.
- Be yourself
Even though you might not think people will like you, it’s important to be yourself and know who you are as a person. People will be more open to be your friend if they see your true self.
- Walk in the halls
There are safety hazards when it comes to running, skipping, or randomly stopping in the hallways. Keep up with the crowd and just get to class. If you see a friend and want to chat for a second, pull them off to the side of the hallway.
- Carry only what you need
Carrying too many things to your classes will wear you out throughout the day and might cause you to be out of energy. Only carry the things that you need for your classes or that you’ll need through the day. Leave any extra items at home or in a locker.
- Make new friends
This one goes for all students. You’ve probably had a group of friends that you were very close with in middle school, and in high school that could change. If you see someone who’s sitting by themselves and they look lonely, talk to them. You never know when you might need someone there for you.
- Plan your classes out
Some classes have grade or prior class prerequisites. If you want to take a class, make sure to plan out what classes you might need to take before. If you want different opportunities in your high school career, take new classes that will allow you to experience different things.
- Keep your grades up
Keeping your grades up will have your teachers trust you and allow for you to excel in high school. Sports also require you to keep a certain grade to remain on the team. Higher grades will also allow you to get into good colleges, jobs or whatever path you want to take. Grades can be looked at up to 10 years after high school so people can still obtain them. Grades will follow you throughout your life.
