With homecoming festivities ramping up, and ongoing construction on 21st street city planners were put in a tough spot. Due to construction, if the parade were to take its traditional route from the Superior Middle School to Wessman Arena, there would be no emergency access to the neighborhoods surrounding the Middle School.
“Because of the construction on 21st, it cuts off an important emergency route,” Student Council advisor Caitlin Zatroch stated.
The solution?
A new route going straight down Catlin Avenue, starts at the University of Wisconsin-Superior and ends in the same spot, Wessman Arena. Due to the change in route, sixth through eighth grade students will not be excused from their typical school day at the middle school in order to attend the parade unlike in past years.
What can you expect?
The new parade route is shorter than the past route, meaning more people will get candy throughout the duration of the parade. You can expect to see floats from years past such as high school sports, clubs, and the marching band. As well as new floats such as Mayor Jim Paine having his own this year.
“I think this will be a smoother parade route because there is no turn. It’s a straight shot down Catlin,” Zatroch predicted.
