The Superior Spartan varsity football team faced the Wildcats of River Falls in a conference matchup on Sep. 6, 2024. The Spartans lost 44-20.
The Spartans took the lead in the first quarter, using a fast tempo of play to stay one step ahead of the Wildcats. Senior defensive tackle Garet Rivord made his first interception in the first quarter. They closed out the quarter leading the Wildcats 14-7
The Wildcats took back the lead before halftime, up 30-14 at the end of the second quarter. In quarter three, Rivord made another interception against the Wildcats. Junior defensive end Mike Fiegle had a fumble recovery in the final quarter of the game, with junior Beckett Selden running the ball in for a touchdown at the end of the drive. The Spartans attempted a two point conversion and failed to score.
Sophomore kicker Reid Bertagnoli went two for two on extra point kicks in his first varsity game.
“Our offensive line is great, and it got me my first varsity touchdown. It was great for me and the whole team, and it gets the momentum going,” said sophomore quarterback Carson Smith after starting his first game
“My attitude was that we had a great week of practice and that we were prepared to win the football game,” said head coach Rob Scott.
“Our kids came out ready to go. We made some costly errors that ended up hurting us, and we didn’t put together a full football game. We saw glimpses of it, some really good plays and some really good executions, but we saw when we didn’t,” said Scott.
Watch the Spartans in action at home on Friday, Sep. 13. They play the Eau Claire North Huskies in the Tackle Cancer fundraiser game, a senior project by seniors Garet Rivord and Tanner Leno.
