I was heading out to the baseball field on a March afternoon. It was my first high school practice with new head coach Ryan Hendry. It was also his first practice. I was only a freshman but was greeted by all the players and coach Hendry when I entered the field.
As practice went on, Hendry showed off his leadership and his capabilities. He showed coaching support to all the players on the field and noticed the little things we could work on to better our performance. Anyone could tell by watching him that he has advanced baseball knowledge and takes pride in enhancing that knowledge for his players.
The name exercise enthusiast reflects Hendry’s lifestyle. Hendry has played multiple sports in his lifetime, including the very bold hobby of being a past part-time bodybuilder.
“Bodybuilding was sort of something I wanted to prove to myself that I could do. I always loved to lift and what the weight room gave me, but I wanted to see if I had the discipline it took to compete. The human body is a fascinating thing and I’ve really become interested in how your diet can help transform your physique,” stated Hendry.
With an overall record of 14-5 during his first season, he showed to the Spartan community that he could lead the team to victory. Hendry is also the assistant coach of the boys hockey team. He displays pride, heart, and tradition on the ice with his players.

Hendry has been a staple for many Spartan athletes.
“He’s a role model by being there for his players. He has pushed me to get better mentally and physically. His presence makes you want to work harder,” said senior baseball and hockey player Andrew Melgeorge.
While being a coach for two teams, he is also the strength coach for all athletic teams. With his extensive knowledge in the weight room, Hendry ensures that all athletes hit their weight goals.
“Athletes at SHS are the best people our community has to offer. They work tirelessly and take on every challenge they face. As a coach, it is our job to give these skills to take with them when they leave,” said Hendry.
Hendry’s complete leadership and dedication to the Spartan community continues to show through his role of being head varsity baseball coach, assistant hockey coach, and strength coach.
