Gym teacher Gunner Johnson isn’t just recognized in the halls of the high school, but is a friendly face across the district as he also teaches elementary school gym. His interest in athletics and physical education provides Johnson with a ground of knowledge to then give to his athletes and students.
Throughout the first semester I had Strength and Conditioning, Johnson left a positive impact on me because of his immediate connections.
Gym teacher Krista Soderstrom has worked in the district for a long time and worked with Johnson while he was a student teacher.
“His biggest thing was that he got to know the kids right away. Alongside that, he was organized, on time, and took ownership. I think it’s important to get to know your students and relate to them, which he is able to do,” Soderstrom said.
Johnson has made an impact on students because he is younger and understands how to work with students. Not only that, but he is a great listener and perseverer while learning the curriculum. For Johnson, connecting with students is very important.
“My biggest goal as a teacher was to make class enjoyable and make sure that if anyone needs anything, I’m there for them. I want every student to be excited and actively participate in gym activities,” says Johnson.
Johnson says his qualities of leadership and lifestyle habits comes from his biggest inspiration: coach Bob DeMeyer. Johnson is building these qualities by taking on new roles, getting involved with extracurriculars, and driving motivation for students and athletes while making his teaching and coaching enjoyable and memorable.
