The Superior Spartans repelled the Marshfield Tigers 44-37 on a chilly Friday night. With the win over the Tigers, the Spartans advance to Level II in the State playoffs against number 1 ranked Pulaski Red Raiders. This was Superior’s first playoff game in five years.

The Spartans began the high scoring affair with an 11-yard touchdown run by junior Carter Fonger. They would then successfully score a 2-point conversion that gave them an 8-0 lead with 7:51 left in the first quarter.

Marshfield struck back with a 17-yard touchdown run by Will Nikolai with 6:15 left in the first quarter. Four minutes later Marshfield scored again to take over the lead at 13-8.

Both Superior and Marshfield’s offenses were slashing through the other teams defense through all four quarter.

Superior’s junior Caden Stone and Marshfield’s Nikolai ran some key rushes.

Each teams running backs had over 100 rushing yards and a touchdown. The play that would keep Superior in the game was in the second quarter. Senior Jarrett Gronski fumbled the snap, which was scooped up by Stone, who ran it all the way down the field for a 79-yard touchdown. The play kept Superior in the game at half with the score tied at 30-30.

Superior and Marshfield were back and forth until the end of the third quarter. The Spartans took a 36-30 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter when Gronski ran for a 60-yard touchdown run.

Marshfield eventually reclaimed the lead on a Joey Goettl touchdown pass.

Superior answered back on a Gronski 25-yard touchdown run. They shut down Marshfield on fourth down and marched back down the field, only to have Gronski slide, running time off the clock. They never gave Marshfield another chance to score. After the slide Superior took two knees to seal the game.
