In his third year as Senior Project Coordinator, Rob Scott has seen many Senior Projects, but there is one that stands out from the others. Senior Sarah King conducted her senior project regarding drug overdose.

“I wanted to do this for my senior project because of my cousin passing a few years ago from overdose. Ever since her funeral, it’s been a topic that has interested me,” King said.

King held an event at Barkers’ Island Inn on Aug. 21, 2017, to raise money for the non-profit organization, Heroin Support Inc. that donates urns to families who have lost a someone in the same way as her cousin.

King had several ideas for the event that simply didn’t work out, such as a sculpture made from WITC’s welding program and a performance by Sterling Silver’s dancers. Both of these examples conflicted with the companies due to the timing of her event.

“I ended up having to switch senior mentors, but I don’t think that hurt my project score at all. Also, during the planning of my project, there were some issues with figuring out which food trucks were going to attend the event, but that was figured out smoothly,” King said.

“I felt amazing about my project. There was a lot to do so it was stressful in the beginning, but once the event was actually happening, it was all worth it. I knew I made a difference in the community, and I had surpassed my goal of $500 by raising $600,” King said.

King presented her senior project on Nov. 15 and received a passing grade from Scott.
