Over the summer, senior Max Carrey ran over three hundred miles in order to prepare for his last season in Cross Country at Superior High School, earning the red white and blue bandana as he leaves his mark on the tradition.
The red, white, and blue bandana is a tradition held by the Cross Country team for years and it goes to the person who represents the team in a positive way and someone with great leadership. It’s passed down from a senior down to the junior who is going to be an upcoming senior and they hold it all of their senior year and then pass it down to the next upcoming senior.
The bandana has been carried by eleven different people throughout the tradition, which was started by Gabe Anderson in 2017 when he would wear the bandana at every meet.
“The bandana represents grit, pride, and tradition we have as a team and is carrying everyone who wore it before and all of his teammates before him,” said Carrey.

Nolan Bird, a Superior alum, had the bandana last year and passed it down to Carrey.
“I gave Max the bandana because of his hard work and dedication on the team and in the classroom while showing great leadership and effort during practice and meets,” said Bird.
Biology teacher Lee Sims is the Head Coach of the Cross Country team.
“The bandana started with Gabe; he was a hard worker and never quit,” Sims said.
“The team thought they should pass it down so that they could continue to run as a team with the bandana,” Sims said.
Carrey said he’ll pass the bandana to someone who represents the program by showing dedication to the team and displaying excellence on and off the course.
