Science teacher Caitlin Zatroch fills another important role in the school. Zatroch has been the student council advisor of five years and has been teaching for 10 years, six of which have been at SHS.
Zatroch was approached by ceramics teacher Nikee Fransisco Hays, the previous student council advisor, and was asked if she would be interested in taking over the position.
Zatroch was the student council advisor when she worked at Montana High School, which made her a great choice to take over for Francisco.
“I let them come up with the ideas, I take their big ideas and make them safe, affordable and feasible,” Zatroch said.
Student council vice president Veronica Acurero, agreed that her approach allows for them to be creative when coming up with event ideas.
“It’s all a bunch of moving parts that come together like puzzle pieces to make the event,” Zatroch said.
According to Zatroch, the largest event by far that student council puts on is homecoming. Preparation for the event begins at the end of the previous school year.
Because this is such a big event, it comes with a lot of stress for Zatroch. She created a list known as “Zatroch’s Stress List,” which holds all the tasks that still need to be completed before homecoming.
“When we are at the assembly, I see all the students come together and enjoy the event we have put on,”
Zatroch said.
Zatroch knows it is going to be stressful but it is also the day that we see all the students together having fun.
“I walk at the end of the parade following all the floats, and when I see all those little kids lined up on the street smiling and cheering, I know it’s all worth it,” Zatroch said.
She sees how much the younger Spartans admire the high school students and how they might even dream of one day being on one of the floats. Zatroch wants everyone to be involved with events and share the fun, enjoyment, spirit and joy with each other.
