Seniors Claire Egnash, Brekyn Warburton, and Kate Porter, hosted a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) awareness night at their home volleyball game on Sept. 30.
In previous years the volleyball team has supported breast cancer awareness. This year they decided to support something a little closer to home.
Warburton brought up the idea of making the change and supporting a new cause. She organized the breast cancer awareness game last year but did not get the turn out she was hoping for.
Warburton’s dad has MS and it was very important to her that the game wasn’t just about fundraising for MS, but raising awareness for the effects of the disease.
Egnash, Warburton, and Porter all agreed the event was successful because there were a lot of people asking questions about MS and wanting to learn more about it.
The seniors made sure to invite representatives from the Multiple Sclerosis Fund to the event to help educate people about the disease.
The “Block Out MS” night raised $3,028.52, through a bake sale, raffle, miracle minute, and t-shirt sales.
“It was very important to me that the money goes to those actually affected by the disease, it affects every part of the person’s daily life, and their families lives, ” Warburton said.
There is no cure for MS, so the best way to help is to donate to organizations that work to improve the quality of life for those living with MS.
In the end the money was donated to the Essentia Health MS patient support and education fund, to better the lives of those who have MS and give support to their families.
