Spartan tennis captain Lily Clark made the switch from doubles to singles for her junior season after being a state doubles qualifier during the 2024-2025 season.
After a dominant sophomore season playing doubles with her older sister Greta Clark, they were the first duo from SHS to qualify for the state tennis tournament since 1998. Greta’s graduation has pushed Lily back into the role as a singles player and captain for this fall season.
“It’s definitely different. Going back to being the only one on the court again has definitely been something to get used to,” Lily said.
Lily has been hard at work with the high school team, as well as participating in morning tennis camps at UWS preparing for this challenge.
“She had been a great captain. Lily was one of the first players to routinely take the lead and run summer practices when no coaches were available and was heavily involved with both new and returning players,” Coach Mark Winkle said.

The switch came unsurprisingly after her long-time doubles partner graduated with the class of 2025. Instead of partnering up with a new teammate, Lily decided to return to playing singles from her freshman season.
“She has adapted well to playing singles, and although she was a great doubles player, her experience and natural skill and strengths are even more suited to singles play,” Winkle said.
Known for her energy and success on the court, Lily is building up a young Spartan tennis team to find success for the seasons to come.
