English teacher Minden Anderson has been preparing for a captivating journey across the sea with her co-direction of “We Are The Sea,” along with theater director Amber Gilbert. This play promises to immerse and captivate audiences in a world of emotion this October at the Performance Arts Center.
Anderson, who has also directed theater at St. Scholastica, has been teaching at Superior High School since 2012. She has an undergraduate degree in theater directing, as well as a degree in teaching literature. She has always been interested in teaching, considering her parents are also teachers.
“I had a lot of friends that were in theater in high school, so I went to a lot of their plays at my school and the other high schools, but I wasn’t really interested in it,” Anderson said.
Theater, at first, wasn’t really something she was that interested in, which changed after an audition landed her a lead role. In her junior year, a friend needed someone to audition with, and since she didn’t have much going on at the time, she accepted. In the end, they were both cast, and Anderson secured the lead role.
Since then, she has worked in community theaters many times, often working with Gilbert on different plays. They are both now working together to put on “We Are The Sea,” which will have a specific tone.
“It’s a darker, more difficult piece,” Anderson said.
She likes the challenge these types of plays provide for students because it gets them thinking outside of the box. She also hopes that the audience will be moved by the play, watching these events that other people have experienced.
“I think she’s [Mrs. Gilbert] incredibly talented, I’ve always enjoyed working with her . . . Students will really benefit from continuing to work with her here,” Anderson said.
