Senior Ava Hill has been seeking out an activity that she has not done since middle school. She has decided to join Spartan Twirlers this fall.
Coach Carolyn Nelson-Kavacjez has wanted Hill to join the team since she was a freshman. Hill decided to join Spartan twirlers this year since it’s her last year of high school and last opportunity to experience being a member of the team.
Hill expected picking twirling back up again after five years would be hard.
“It’s like riding a bike,” Hill said.
Her skills easily came back to her, as she often practices at home to improve her twirling.

“Seniors will be told to be in the front, but I’m told to go to the back with the freshmen since I’ve never done this before,” Hill said.
Hill’s teammates describe her as a great teammate to be around during practice and someone that can always make others laugh. Senior twirler Lila Gucinski has taken notice of Hill’s continuous hard work.
“I see her becoming a better twirler every practice,” Gucinski said.
Hill is not afraid to contribute her ideas to the team, and continues to help create a positive environment at practices.
Hill has been involved in competitive dance for the last 14 years, and she enjoys the different environment of Spartan twirlers.
“We’re always giggling and playing around,” Hill said.
Being a part of the team is constantly creating new experiences for Hill. Hill is loving practices so far, and is excited to see what the rest of the season will bring.
“Spartan Twirlers is more of a fun thing, it’s more laid back than dance in my mind,” Hill said.
Hill is looking forward to performing during halftime at the remaining home football games. She has never been one who attends football games to watch.
“Being in Spartan twirlers is a way I can be a part of the high school and community,” Hill said.
Joining the team late for her age was a big and difficult adjustment for Hill, but definitely not one she regrets.
“If you have anything you’re considering doing, just try it. If you don’t like it, maybe that’s when you back out, but don’t say no right away before trying something new,” Hill said.
