The girls tennis season was one to remember with many individual and team accomplishments.
The team went 13-8 in matches. Their No. 1 doubles pair earned the sectional champion title as well as qualifying for state.
“I think this was a great season for us. I think that we all played really well as a team and individually,” said senior captain Annika Nikoi.
The Spartans slid past the Duluth East Greyhounds with a 4-3 win and a close deciding match for Superior’s doubles two team: Kenlyn Thimm and Ava Dahl. They pulled out the win with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
“A team highlight would definitely be beating Duluth East. We haven’t done that in, I don’t know how long” said coach Mark Winkle.
An individual highlight would be sisters Lily Clark and Greta Clark qualifying for state. In order to qualify for the state championship they beat Stevens Point in a close match. After the Clarks had already claimed their spot for state, they still had two more matches to see their placing in the section. In those two matches the Clarks got past Hudson and Eau Claire to be the top team out of 16.
The sisters ended their regular season with a doubles record of 13-0. According to the most recent coaches’ memories, the last time a player went undefeated was before the 1990s.
This year was monumental for the Spartans, but next year could be a big shift as they are losing seven out of their twelve main varsity players. This year, the team doubled as 20 new players joined. With all of the opportunities the junior varsity team has gotten this year, it shows promising talent for the future line up.
