DECA helped raise over $2,000 at annual tailgate for local charity

DECA’s annual Tailgate party took place on Friday, September 15 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. Sarah Cannon, the vice president of DECA ran the Tailgate for her senior project. DECA does this every year because it is a way to do a community event and donate for an organization. This year DECA is donating the money to the Colon Cancer Coalition in memory of Sarah’s aunt Jenelle Langdon. Jenelle had colon cancer for seven and a half years and passed away in December of 2016 from the disease.

“I’m just kind of doing this in memory of her,” Cannon said.

She raised money by selling tailgate shirts, and  50/50 raffle tickets. They also did the miracle minute in between the first and second quarter. The miracle minute is where you pass a bucket around the bleachers trying to collect as much money as you can from the fans that are in the stands.

Admission to the game was five dollars and with that, you would get food and prizes. If you just paid for the game and you still wanted food you could have donated a dollar or two to get some food. So, all this money she’s making goes into the donation buckets. The most challenging thing Sarah had was the shirts. The most exciting thing she was looking forward to was the check. The check she got from all of this was $2,118. All of Sarah’s hard work paid off.
