The Day of Silence is an annual, day-long event organized by the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). At SHS the GSA is run by English teachers, Rachel Holden-Kaufman, Emily Kelly and Jason Kenison.

This event is put on to show support for people in the LGBTQ community who are silenced every day from bullying and not being accepted.

On Friday, May 4, the participants will be silent for the entire duration of the school day using other forms of communication to converse with people. At the end of the school day, there will be a Breaking the Silence ceremony in Kenisons room to support all of the people being silenced and encourage them to express themselves as they are.

“It’s for all the people who have been silenced in their life and get to talk about who they are,” sophomore Dylan Schelinder said.

Schelinder has been apart of the GSA for two years. He enjoys going to GSA meetings because he can talk about who he really is, and get to know what other people have to say.

The GSA has t-shirts, pins and other merchandise for sale. All the money earned from the merchandise will go to the school’s GSA program that they use for events throughout the year.

The GSA club here at SHS has been going on for over a decade.
