Spartan Boys Hockey fell to the Duluth East Greyhounds on Thurs., Feb. 1, at Wessman Arena.

Forward junior Taylor Burger came up with the first shot of the game at just over two minutes.

The Hounds were quick to respond, sending forward Jack Fitzgerald on a breakaway, putting East up 1-0.  3:53 into the game.

East capitalized on three out of the four power plays they had.

“We started off strong with four goals in the first period. Then we got a little sloppy in the last two periods, but, overall, I thought they played well,” East head coach Mike Randolph said .

East outshot Superior 36-8, and went on to win 7-0. Caden Welch ended the game with 29 saves.

“We need to work on our zone defense and shutting down the powerplay,” Superior head coach Jason Kalin said. “If we improve in those areas, I can see us going all the way in playoffs this year.”

The Spartans (12-8-2) go into next week with big challenges facing Hermantown on Feb. 5 and Eau Claire Memorial on Feb 10.
