School Start Date Up In The Air

‘While the day after Labor Day has been a benchmark for the end of the high school summer, things may change next year. The Quality Improvement Committee will meet after Thanksgiving break to discuss when school will start for the 2018-19 academic year, considering the progress of construction at Cooper Elementary and the high school. The Quality Improvement Committee is comprised of staff members, some of whom are parents of students in the district.

“We have to get out a calendar soon, obviously, because families have to know for vacations and day care,” assistant principal Andrea Sorensen said.

The administrators are unsure currently what the start date of the upcoming year will be.

“What we just don’t want is that I could say one thing today, and it changes tomorrow, and that’s just where the rumor mill starts,” Sorensen said.

Superintendent Janna Stevens has stated that the plan to start school possibly a week later, perhaps Sept. 10, has been the plan for some time. The administrators’ plan is to have this issue resolved by January.
